The present importation of all sorts of films, form the western world has reached an alarming rate. This applies also to the technological advancement and innovation in information dissemination, via cable and satellites.
This project is aimed at knowing “The Effect of foreign Films on Youth in Nigeria” among mass communication student of the Ibarapa polytechnic, Eruwa , Oyo State.
Three hypotheses were adopted, in this research.
(i) Do most youth of school age watch foreign films without any form of control by parents and guardians?
(ii) That behavior, characters and attitude of sex, crime, violence, shooting drugs and destruction exhibited by the youth emanated from their exposure to foreign films
(iii) Do most youth of school age have access to foreign films, watch it and through which medium
The behavior pattern of the chosen group for this project (youth) , their traits and attitudes and how the values and cultures of the Nigerian society affects their already held dispositions as against the foreign cultures, was looked into.
The research method used is the survey method, questionnaire were administered to the selected department in the Ibarapa Polytechnic , Eruwa through a simple random sampling. The researcher is assuming that foreign films have a lot of influences on the attitude and behavior exhibited by youth in recent times. These include crime, sex, violence destruction and drug abuse. This research has helped ascertained to what extent foreign films influence the youth character.
Of all the media of mass communication, the motion picture is perhaps universally as medium combines pictures and sound to create a lasting Impression. A film can rise above the limitation of language and cultural barriers by the power of its usual images, this use of music and sound effects can succeed in conveying much the same to viewers of heterogonous backgrounds.
Large-scale research on the effect of mass communication began with the polymer fund studies. These Effort of the 1920s and early 1930s Concluded that motion pictures had many Influences and effect on youth. The early research was discredited by experts, but it confirmed they had potential dangerous Influence on the youth.
In content analysis, experiments and survey all Indicators pointed to the conclusion did raise the probability that some teenagers or youth would be more aggressive. In a review of some 2,500 research studies of the effects of television (the second report to the surgeon general) the link between exposure to violence portrayed on television and aggressive behavior (among youth) was seen as somewhat stronger.
